Where I live, rain is almost a daily part of life, especially during the summer rainy season. As an expert in sound recordings, especially white noise, it got me to thinking:
Do we ever really listen to the many sounds of rain and how they affect our moods?
Some days the rain shower is brief, one of those “wait a few minutes and the rain will be over” episodes. On the other extreme, during a typical summer rain storm, my house windows will rattle and quake to deep thunder rumbling and pelting rain, interspersed with blinding, crackling lightning. This particular symphony of Mother Nature’s sights and sounds makes me feel safe and cozy within my home or workplace.
Then, there are those days of a steady rain, with or without thunder in the distance, making me wish I could skip work and just cuddle up with a good book (or my special someone).
As an audio professional, I realized that each rain sound had a particular pitch, tone and tempo. All of the rain sounds offered sound masking qualities while others, like Restful Rain, helped create an environment of comforting calm and tranquility.
The sound of rain also helps me recall pleasant memories, adding to a positive sense of well-being. The inspiration for one of my favorite rain sounds, Rain on a Tin Roof, developed when I celebrated a birthday with my family and friends at a local park that had tin-roofed pavilions. We were all enjoying a fun-filled barbeque when the skies opened and the rain came pouring down. We all ran to the pavilion, where we remained dry, as we continued our picnic while hearing the soothing patter of rain on the roof. Whenever I hear that rain on a tin roof sound, it makes me smile every time I hear it, since it reminds me of that very special birthday and how happy I felt that day.
Now that I was “in tune” with rain sounds, I set out to create a collection of rain sound recordings, capturing the pure sound of rain rather than relying on sound effects created within a studio. Thus, the Pure Nature Sounds CD and mp3 download collection was born. (Want some fun? Read about my adventures recording my first rain sound many years ago!)
So the next time it rains, take the time to really listen to it — and discover just how marvelous every rain sound is. If you prefer to experience a variety of rain sounds without getting wet (!), click on the rain sound covers on the right side of this page or visit our website.
