Where I live, rain is almost a daily part of life, especially during the summer rainy season. As an expert in sound recordings, especially white noise, it got me to thinking:
Do we ever really listen to the many sounds of rain and how they affect our moods?
Some days the rain shower is brief, one of those "wait a few minutes and the rain will be over" episodes. On the other extreme, during a typical summer rain storm, my house windows will rattle and quake to deep thunder rumbling and pelting rain, interspersed with blinding, crackling lightning. The sound of rain is music to my ears, because it’s so soothing and calming. That’s why I devote my life to recording and sharing all kinds of rain sounds.
The other day I received an email containing a “running in the rain” story called Need Washing? from a friend. Although it has nothing to do with rain sounds per se, Need Washing? provides another perspective on why rain can be so calming to the soul.

Rain Song came about in my quest to create a rain music album that focused on the rain as the “star,” accompanied by a soothing underbed of music. It was important that the rain album let the music support the rain, and not the other way around.
Most importantly, I wanted a rain music CD that was quite mellow and very potent for falling and staying asleep. Who knew that a hurricane would provide the ideal rain sound? (more…)

Being an incurable insomniac all my life, I have always been on the lookout for tools to help me relax and fall to sleep. One of my all time favorite sounds for sleep has been the rain. Even as a young child and teenager, I would always look forward to incoming night time rain storms, as this meant I could open my bedroom window and enjoy the wonderful soothing sounds of the rain and blissfully drift off to sleep. Even in the coldest weather, I would crack open the window just enough so I could hear that wonderful white noise rain sound. (more…)
